green roof

Everything you need to upgrade your flat roof to a green roof, ecological, economical and easy to implement.

Why choose a green roof?

A green roof is part of the exterior layout of your property and contributes to providing it with aesthetic and environmental added value. The green roof acts as an anti-UV screen for the waterproofing membrane. Greening gives your home a little extra thermal insulation.

Precautions for implementing the green roof

Protect EPDM sealing

The first step is to protect your EPDM waterproofing with an indestructible and tear-proof anti-puncture geotextile. The minimum overlap between strips is 10 cm.

Be careful not to use dangerous fasteners for your EPDM seal. Nails, screws, staples must not be used to fix the geotextile or other elements of the revegetation system. The weight of the substrate is sufficient to ballast and fix the geotextile and the drain plates.
Similarly, tools such as cutters should be avoided to eliminate the risk of perforation of the membrane, prefer these round-tipped scissors for any need to cut felts.

Allow access for maintenance

If the surface of your green roof is large, or in the presence of roof outlets such as cable ducts or ventilation outlets, we recommend leaving paths to access all the elements that may require regular maintenance. The paths are delimited by gravel guard strips and can be covered with rolled gravel or pebbles, or even with slabs on studs.

The gravel guard boxes protect your rainwater outlets, they prevent obstruction by gravel but also by plant elements such as dead leaves or weeds.

Does my green roof need watering?

For extensive vegetation: sedum shoots, grasses

Watering the green roof is essential during the growth period of the vegetation so that the greenery covers the entire surface of the roof.

Then, a weak artificial watering is necessary only in case of drought during the summer period.

For intensive or semi-intensive revegetation

The green roofs are then maintained like a terraced garden with natural soil and the watering depends on the needs of the plantations.

What type of plants are suitable for a green roof?

Extensive vegetation:

The following horticultural or wild plants are allowed:

  • Succulent plants (sedum type),
  • Perennials (carnation type),
  • Bulbous plants (iris type),
  • Perennial grasses (fescue type),
  • Low growth woody plants.

Semi-intensive revegetation:

Semi-intensive greening is more varied:

  • Succulent plants (sedum type),
  • Perennials (carnation type),
  • Bulbous plants (iris type),
  • Perennial grasses (fescue type),
  • Low growth woody plants.
  • Shrubby plants with low development (up to 1.50 m high),
  • Perennials and grasses (lawns and meadows).

Intensive revegetation:

The intensive revegetation is a veritable terraced garden which can accommodate slightly more robust shrubs and above all the thickness of the substrate allows the cultivation of a vegetable patch.
